Colour Care

Top Tips:

Whether you’ve opted for a rich brunette, fiery copper, natural cool brown, bold vivid, or anything in between, maintaining your colour between salon visits is key to keeping it looking fresh.

Here’s how to give your hair the TLC it needs:

1. Wait Before Washing?

It's a common myth that you need to wait 24-48 hours before washing your hair after colouring. Modern professional hair colour formulas, like the ones we use, are designed to lock in during the colouring process. At Salem, we actually wash and condition your hair before you leave the salon to ensure the colour is properly rinsed, set and sealed.

However, it’s still important to be mindful that the more you do wash your hair the quicker the colour will fade.

2. Use Colour-Safe Products

Choose shampoos and conditioners specifically formulated for colour-treated hair. Pretty much all salon quality products will meet this requirement, Keune definitely does!

For vivids, ideally look for sulfate-free options designed to prevent fading and keep your shade bold (eg. Keune Tinta Color!)

3. Cool It Down

Hot water can strip your color and dry out your hair.
Stick to lukewarm or cool water when washing to help preserve your shade.

4. Limit Washing

Washing your hair less frequently is a game-changer for maintaining your colour.
Dry shampoo is great to keep roots fresh and styles intact, just make sure you are washing the dry shampoo out after a day or two, as a clean scalp is essential for healthy hair!

5. Protect from Heat

Always use a heat protectant before blowdrying and styling with hot tools.
Heat can dull literally burn the colour molecules out of your hair, resulting in faded brassy looking tones!
So dial down the temperature to around 180° (or less) wherever possible.

6. Shield from the Sun

UV rays can fade your colour pretty quickly, especially vivids. You wouldn’t send the whole day outside without sunscreen (or at least you shouldn’t be!) so why would you do that to your hair?
Protect your hair with a product that contains UV protection, wear a hat, or stay shaded when you’re out in the sun.

7. Avoid Chlorine and Salt Water

Chlorine and salt water can strip colour and leave your hair dry. Rinse your hair with fresh water before swimming, use a protective leave-in conditioner then braid or use a or swim cap to minimise damage. Rinse with fresh water again afterward!

8. Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate

Colour-treated hair needs moisture!

Use a deep conditioning mask or leave-in treatment weekly to keep your hair soft, shiny, and healthy.

9. Regular Trims

Even with perfect at-home care, split ends can dull your colour’s overall appearance. Book trims every 6–12 weeks to keep your hair looking fresh and polished.
Growing your hair and scared to get it cut that regularly?
Book in for a split end dusting to take care of just those splits or an “I’m growing my hair and I don’t want a haircut trim”
